Global bond funds that saw the largest inflows in Q1

International investors poured hundreds of millions into these five funds registered for sale in Asia and the Middle East

5. Vontobel Fd TwentyFour Strat Income

The Vontobel Fd TwentyFour Strat Income Fd HI USD fund gathered inflows of £157.78 million ($199.37 million) in the first quarter ending 31 March, awarding it the fifth place.

The fund is run by A-rated managers Mark Holman (pictured), Felipe Villarroel and Eoin Walsh, as well as + rated Gary Kirk. The $2 billion strategy returned 20.3% in US dollar terms in the three years ending 30 April, data from Citywire Discovery showed.

Launched in November 2015, the unconstrained strategy invests in a wide range of fixed-interest and floating rate securities, including government, supra-national, corporate bonds and asset-backed securities globally.

5. Vontobel Fd TwentyFour Strat Income

The Vontobel Fd TwentyFour Strat Income Fd HI USD fund gathered inflows of £157.78 million ($199.37 million) in the first quarter ending 31 March, awarding it the fifth place.

4. Templeton Global Bond

The Templeton Global Bond A (Mdis) USD fund came in fourth, with inflows totalling £177.93 million ($224.87 million) in the first three months of 2019.

Managed by + rated Michael Hasenstab, the $14.2 billion fund returned 14% in US dollars over the past three years.

Launched in February 1991, the vehicle invests in fixed- and floating-rate debt securities, including non-investment grade bonds, and debt obligations issued by government and government-related entities worldwide. The portfolio may also comprise corporate debt.

3. Templeton Global Total Return

Michael Hasenstab’s Templeton Global Total Return A (acc) USD fund also received significant investor interest in the first quarter, attracting inflows of £556.65 million ($703.43 million).

The $16.3 billion fund clocked gains of 14.5% in US dollars over the past three years.

Launched in August 2003, the vehicle invests principally in a portfolio of fixed- and floating-rate debt securities and obligations issued by governments, government-related bodies and corporate entities worldwide. The fund also purchases debt obligations issued by supranational entities backed by governments.

2. PIMCO GIS Global Bond 

In the second place is the PIMCO GIS Global Bond Inst USD Acc fund, with inflows of $745.06 million ($940.6 million) in the first quarter.

The strategy is run by a trio of AA-rated managers, namely Andrew Balls (pictured), Sachin Gupta and Lorenzo Pagani. Over the past three years, the fund was up 12.3% in US dollars.

Launched in March 1998, the $11.65 billion fund invests at least two-thirds of its assets in a diversified portfolio of fixed income instruments denominated in major world currencies.

1. M&G (Lux) Optimal Income 

Leading the pack is the M&G (Lux) Optimal Income A-H Acc USD fund, which received £15.94 billion ($20.13 billion) in inflows in the first three months of 2019.

This March the non-sterling share classes of the M&G Optimal Income fund were merged into the M&G (Lux) Optimal Income fund, bolstering the $21 billion fund. The strategy, run by Richard Woolnough, returned 3.3% in US dollars over the three months ending 30 April.

Launched last September, the fund invests at least 50% in bonds issued by governments or companies in developed and emerging markets, and employs derivatives. The portfolio may also include company shares.
